1. Create Safe and Supportive Environments
Employees thrive in environments where they feel they can speak openly without fear of judgment. Build and encourage productive communication practices. Actively listen when team members share their thoughts or concerns. Acknowledge their feelings and work together to create real solutions.
De-stigmatize reaching out for help with mental health challenges. Your team members may be dealing with situations that aren’t necessarily related to work, but will affect the quality of their work. Someone may be encountering depression, going through a divorce, or experiencing physical abuse at home. Remind your team about resources available through your company, such as utilizing an employee assistance program (EAP). Let them know that when they use an EAP, it’s separate from their insurance, it’s free, and confidential.
2. Prioritize Recognition
Everyone at your workplace wants to feel seen and valued, but recognition often falls to the wayside when your work keeps you busy. Make it a habit to celebrate achievements, no matter how big or small. A heartfelt “thank you” or public acknowledgment can boost a team member’s morale tremendously.
When an employee successfully completes a large project, consider offering extra PTO, a specially catered lunch, or small but personalized gifts. When you recognize their efforts, you motivate them to continue striving for excellence.
3. Support Work-Life Balance
You may have heard a lot of discussion lately about the validity of work-life balance. Some believe they must be conscientious about how much time staff spend working versus time with their friends and family. Some think it’s not.
