Celebrating Wichita Wellness Day and Building Healthier Workplaces

On June 26, our community will once again recognize Wichita Wellness Day, a day dedicated to promoting health, wellbeing, and resilience throughout our city. At empac, this day holds special meaning. In 2025, a proclamation was submitted and approved recognizing June 26 as Wichita Wellness Day, reinforcing the importance of wellness not only in our personal lives but also within the organizations that drive our community forward.

As workplaces continue to navigate evolving challenges including employee stress, burnout, workforce shortages, and increasing demands for flexibility, one thing has become clear: workplace wellness is no longer a “nice-to-have” benefit. It is a business necessity.

Wellness Is More Than Physical Health

When many people hear the term “workplace wellness,” they immediately think of fitness challenges or healthy snacks in the breakroom. While physical health is important, true workplace wellness is much broader.

A comprehensive wellness approach recognizes that employees are whole people with interconnected needs. Wellness encompasses multiple dimensions, including:

  • Emotional wellbeing
  • Mental health
  • Physical health
  • Social connection
  • Financial wellbeing
  • Professional growth
  • Work-life balance

When one area of wellness is strained, it often affects other areas as well. An employee experiencing high levels of stress, for example, may also struggle with sleep, concentration, workplace relationships, and overall job satisfaction.

Organizations that understand this connection are more likely to create environments where employees can thrive.

The Business Impact of Employee Wellbeing

When employees feel supported, valued, and equipped to manage life’s challenges, they are more likely to:

  • Be engaged in their work
  • Demonstrate higher productivity
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues
  • Deliver stronger customer service
  • Stay with the organization longer
  • Contribute to a positive workplace culture

Conversely, chronic stress and burnout can lead to:

  • Increased absenteeism
  • Higher turnover
  • Reduced morale
  • Decreased productivity
  • Workplace conflict
  • Greater healthcare costs

Leaders often focus on operational metrics, financial goals, and strategic initiatives, important factors, yes, however, the people responsible for achieving those goals are the organization’s greatest asset. Investing in employee wellbeing is ultimately an investment in organizational success.

Today’s Workforce Faces Unique Challenges

Employees today are navigating a complex set of demands both inside and outside of work.

Many are balancing:

  • Family responsibilities
  • Caregiving obligations
  • Financial pressures
  • Workplace change
  • Increased workloads
  • Uncertainty about the future

These challenges do not disappear when employees walk through the workplace door.

The reality is that personal stress often follows employees into the workplace, affecting focus, performance, and overall wellbeing. Organizations that acknowledge these realities and provide meaningful support can make a significant difference in employees’ lives.

This is one reason Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), leadership development, wellness initiatives, and supportive workplace cultures have become increasingly important.

Wellness Starts with Leadership

One of the most influential factors in employee wellbeing is leadership.

Employees look to supervisors and organizational leaders for guidance, support, and communication. Leaders who foster trust, provide clear expectations, recognize achievements, and encourage healthy work habits create environments where employees feel valued and supported.

Simple leadership practices can have a powerful impact, including:

  • Encouraging employees to use available wellness resources
  • Promoting healthy boundaries and work-life balance
  • Recognizing accomplishments
  • Checking in regularly with team members
  • Creating psychological safety
  • Modeling healthy behaviors

Organizations that invest in leadership development often see positive outcomes not only in performance but also in employee engagement and workplace culture.

Building a Culture of Wellness

Workplace wellness is most effective when it becomes part of an organization’s culture rather than a one-time initiative. Building a culture of wellness does not require a large budget or complex programs. It begins with intentional actions and a commitment to supporting employees.

Organizations can start by:

  • Encouraging open conversations about wellbeing
  • Promoting mental health resources
  • Offering professional development opportunities
  • Supporting work-life integration
  • Recognizing employee contributions
  • Providing opportunities for connection and engagement
  • Evaluating workplace practices that may contribute to stress

Small, consistent efforts often have the greatest long-term impact.
